From Trail to Triage: Celebrating NSP’s Bike Program During National Bike Month

May is National Bike Month, a time to celebrate the riders, trails, volunteers, and communities that make cycling safer and more accessible. For National Ski Patrol, it is also an opportunity to highlight the growing impact of the NSP Bike program and the patrollers and hosts who deliver emergency care in outdoor environments.

The NSP Bike program draws on more than 85 years of outdoor rescue experience to deliver training specifically tailored to the bike environment. Whether supporting lift-access parks, urban patrols, open-space routes, or backcountry singletrack, bike patrollers and hosts learn to respond with confidence, sound judgment, and practical skill.

Outdoor cycling environments can change quickly. A routine ride may turn into an emergency due to crashes, heat illnesses, equipment issues, changing weather, or challenging terrain.
Bike patrollers are trained to assess scenes, support patient care, and coordinate with other responders when additional resources are needed. Their preparation helps keep riders safer and ensures that help can arrive where it is needed most.

The program is designed for a wide range of experience levels, from new hosts or patrollers to seasoned responders looking to expand their skills. Through inclusive training pathways, NSP helps volunteers and professionals grow into capable, confident members of the outdoor-rescue community.

That sense of community is central to the Bike program. By recruiting, mentoring, and advancing dedicated patrollers and hosts, NSP strengthens patrol ranks year-round and supports safer recreation beyond the winter season.

During National Bike Month, NSP recognizes the riders who explore the trails, the teams who maintain safe outdoor spaces, and the patrollers who stand ready to help. From trail to triage, the NSP Bike program prepares responders to serve with skill, care, and purpose wherever the ride leads.
